Three laundry tips for summer

Published on: 1/07/2026 Author: Demi

As soon as temperatures rise, our laundry routine changes. After all, we want to spend as little time indoors as possible and get back outside as quickly as we can. To help you get through these months feeling fresh and stain-free, we’ve put together the 3 handiest summer laundry tips. This way, your clothes stay looking great, and you keep your laundry room and washing machine cabinet perfectly organized during the hottest days.

Washing tips for summer

Tip 1: Deal with stubborn sunscreen stains

It’s a real summer frustration: yellow, greasy stains on your favourite white T-shirt or that nice beach towel. Sunscreen protects our skin perfectly, but it’s a nightmare for fabrics. The culprit is often the UV filter (such as avobenzone), which reacts with minerals in hard water to form a type of rust stain.

How do I remove sunscreen stains from my clothes?

Whatever you do, don't wait too long. The longer the UV filter soaks into the fibres, the harder it is to remove.

  • The golden rule: Treat the stain immediately with liquid detergent or washing-up liquid (which works well to break down grease) and let it soak in for a bit.
  • What shouldn't you do? Never use bleach. Bleach actually reacts with the chemicals in the sunscreen, making those yellow stains even darker and more permanent.

Tip 2: Smart sun-drying (without fading)

Nothing smells better than laundry that’s been hanging outside to dry in the fresh air. Plus, it’s free, sustainable, and dries incredibly fast on warm days. However, bright summer sunshine does come with a few catches.

Should clothes be dried in direct sunlight?

The short answer is: it depends on the colour. The sun acts as a natural bleaching agent. For your white laundry, direct sunlight is fantastic. It helps keep whites looking bright and even tackles the last remaining traces of those sunscreen stains we just mentioned. For coloured laundry, however, strong UV rays are the enemy, as they cause your clothes to fade quickly.

Can I dry black clothes in the sun?

It’s best not to hang black and dark clothing in direct sunlight. If you do, always turn the items inside out and choose a spot in the shade. In summer, the air is usually warm enough to dry your clothes quickly even in the shade. This preserves the deep black colour and prevents streaks on the fabric.

Tip 3: Doing laundry on holiday (stress-free)

No matter how well you pack, sooner or later it’s time to do laundry. After all, you don’t want to pack your entire suitcase full of clothes for three weeks.

How to wash clothes on holiday?

The key to success is keeping on top of it. Don’t wait to wash until you’ve completely run out of clothes; instead, do a small load every two or three days. Don’t have a washing machine available at your campsite? Handwashing a few items in the sink takes no time at all. Bring a universal tube of handwash detergent or use a tiny bit of mild baby shampoo.

Handy laundry tips for your holiday

  • Use a laundry bag: Bring a breathable, fabric laundry bag from home. Toss your dirty washing in here throughout your holiday. Plastic bags trap moisture, causing unpleasant smells and, in the worst-case scenario, mildew stains.

  • Roll it dry: Done some handwashing and it’s taking too long to dry? Lay the garment flat on a clean, dry towel. Roll the towel up tightly and press out the excess water. This leaves the item half-dry before it even hits the washing line.
  • Multipurpose pegs: Always pack a small bag of pegs and a compact clothesline. Even if there’s a drying rack available, it can get quite windy by the coast.

Summer-proofing your laundry room

Coming home from a wonderful holiday, the mountain of laundry waiting in your utility room can easily feel overwhelming. To stop your floor from disappearing under unsorted washing, a smartly organized laundry room is the perfect solution.

By opting for a Washtower® washing machine cabinet, you can easily bring structure to your daily routine. The modular system allows you to place your appliances at the ideal, comfortable working height. When loading and unloading your laundry, you can set your laundry baskets on the pull-out shelf, meaning you won't have to keep bending down deep to fill the drum. Ergonomic and convenient!

Can I hang washing out overnight in summer?

Yes, you can hang your washing out overnight in the summer, especially on warm, breezy nights when clothes will dry quickly. However, you should keep in mind that morning dew can re-dampen your laundry if you leave it out too late, and ambient moisture might cause fabrics to feel slightly stiff or damp by dawn.

Is it OK to air dry clothes in the sun?

As for drying clothes in the sun, it is completely fine and very effective, but it works best for white garments because sunlight acts as a natural bleaching and disinfecting agent. For dark or brightly coloured clothing, direct sunlight can cause rapid fading and weaken the fabric fibres over time. To protect your coloured clothes while air drying outside, it is always a good idea to turn them inside out or hang them in a shaded, well-ventilated spot instead.

How to wash clothes without a washer while traveling?

Washing clothes without a machine while traveling is simple if you use a clean sink, basin, or dry bag as a portable tub. Start by plugging the sink or filling your container with lukewarm water and adding a small amount of liquid travel detergent or mild shampoo. Submerge your garments, gently agitate them by hand for a couple of minutes, and let them soak for about ten minutes to loosen dirt and sweat. Rinse the items thoroughly with fresh, cool water until all soap residue is completely gone. Finally, roll each garment tightly inside a dry towel and press firmly to squeeze out excess moisture before hanging it up to air dry.
